Macedonia as a whole is a series of mountains
in mazes rather than ranges, with extensive
plains at their feet. The result of the Bulgarian
offensive had been to push the Serbian Left off
the Monastir plain and on to the Malkanidje
heights, while the Centre was held up before the
crests of Starkov Grob, through which the fron-
tier line ran ; and the Right confronted the
continuation of this barrier of hills by Pojar,
Vetrenik, and Fushtani. No more generally
difficult and unfavourable line could possibly
be imagined. The Bulgars had all the highest
points, and in this roadless, mountainous region,
exposed to observation and weak in artillery,
yet once more the unlucky Serbs found themselves
