Paprika stew was <strong>the</strong> favourite meat dish—<br />

an event which seldom happened more than<br />

once a week. These people lived ma<strong>in</strong>ly on<br />

bread. A smoky lamp, used only <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> depth<br />

of w<strong>in</strong>ter, was <strong>the</strong> sole means of illum<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

after dark. A more animal-like and comfortless<br />

existence it would be impossible to imag<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

Its squalor was as appall<strong>in</strong>g as <strong>the</strong> smells. It<br />

was easy to understand why nearly every family<br />

had a son who had gone to America to make<br />

his fortune. What was more difficult to understand<br />

was why <strong>the</strong>y came back, as <strong>the</strong>y so often<br />

did, and drifted once more <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> old <strong>in</strong>sanitary,<br />

uncomfortable ways. How people were<br />

ill or had babies <strong>in</strong> such places one dare not<br />

conceive.<br />

Th<strong>in</strong>gs, of course, are different <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> towns,<br />

though goodness knows <strong>the</strong>se are squalid enough.<br />

But most people have beds and a certa<strong>in</strong> amount<br />

of furniture. The treasure of treasures among<br />

<strong>the</strong> poorer classes are sew<strong>in</strong>g-mach<strong>in</strong>es and<br />

German-made wardrobes with mirror doors.<br />

These latter take <strong>the</strong> place of <strong>the</strong> piano <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

hearts of our own work<strong>in</strong>g-people.<br />

Monastir, <strong>in</strong> New Serbia, was <strong>the</strong> most<br />

<strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Macedonia</strong>n town we saw. Most of<br />

it was very Turkish, <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>cipal mosque<br />

was a quite impos<strong>in</strong>g build<strong>in</strong>g, and <strong>the</strong> resi-<br />

dential quarter conta<strong>in</strong>ed many fasc<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g
