been that it was necessary to disband <strong>the</strong> famous<br />

Volunteer Corps, whose heroic Commander,<br />

<strong>the</strong> ''<br />

Wolf " had been killed, and one <strong>in</strong>fantry<br />

regiment <strong>in</strong> each division to br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

regiments to a workable strength.<br />

Up to <strong>the</strong> end of 1916 <strong>the</strong> Serbian losses were :<br />

Officers killed and died, 271 ; wounded, 917 ;<br />

miss<strong>in</strong>g, 21— 1209 <strong>in</strong> all. In men, killed and<br />

died, 6935 ; wounded, 22,723 ; miss<strong>in</strong>g, 1684—<br />

a total of 31,342. All told, for all ranks, <strong>the</strong><br />

casualties amounted to 32,551. Their losses<br />

<strong>in</strong> material were trifl<strong>in</strong>g consider<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> severity<br />

of those five months' fight<strong>in</strong>g : 11 guns,<br />

2 mach<strong>in</strong>e-guns and 8 trench mortars, 6217<br />

rifles, 18 ammunition limbers and 14 waggons.<br />

The ga<strong>in</strong>s were :<br />

<strong>the</strong>m 1 179 Germans ;<br />

prisoners, 7171, among<br />

97 guns, 87 mach<strong>in</strong>e-guns,<br />

87 trench mortars, 14, 765 rifles, 112 ammunition<br />

limbers, and 83 waggons. Besides this, beyond<br />

all question, <strong>the</strong> enemy had had at least from<br />

two to three times more men put out of action.
