long spells of idleness that seem <strong>in</strong>separable<br />

from <strong>the</strong> silly bus<strong>in</strong>ess of war, our men knew a<br />

certa<strong>in</strong> amount of danger, difficulty, and dis-<br />

comfort, and faced death from aeroplane,<br />

accident, and disease. However, one may as<br />

well beg<strong>in</strong> a little nearer to <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

706, 707, 708, and 709 M.T. Companies were<br />

specially devised to carry supplies and ammunition<br />

for <strong>the</strong> Serbians <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> almost railless, road-<br />

less Balkans. The idea was that heavy lorries<br />

would work from <strong>the</strong> railhead, as far as <strong>the</strong><br />

roads were practicable for such vehicles. From<br />

that po<strong>in</strong>t, Ford vans would carry on, us<strong>in</strong>g<br />

tracks and passes impossible for <strong>the</strong> ''<br />

heavies.*'<br />

Rail and road makers and menders, of course,<br />

were to get busy while <strong>the</strong> armies fought, and<br />

so, step by step, everybody was to journey to<br />

Belgrade. That was <strong>the</strong> idea— but <strong>in</strong> practice<br />

th<strong>in</strong>gs worked out a little differently.<br />

To beg<strong>in</strong> with, <strong>the</strong>re was a difficulty about<br />

control, which was f<strong>in</strong>ally settled, as <strong>the</strong> <strong>Serbs</strong><br />

had no motor transport of <strong>the</strong>ir own, by what<br />

was known as <strong>the</strong> Serbian M.T. Units be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

placed under <strong>the</strong> British Director of Supplies<br />

and Transport, General Arthur Long. In o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

words, British transport was to work for <strong>the</strong><br />

Serbians under <strong>the</strong> direction of <strong>the</strong> French— a<br />

situation bristl<strong>in</strong>g with possibilities of discord.<br />
