Suffer<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong>, on a fur<strong>the</strong>r heart-break<strong>in</strong>g<br />

six-days' march through roadless swamps to<br />

Valona by way of Durazzo. On that last march<br />

— ^<strong>the</strong> straw which ought to and yet somehow<br />

did not break <strong>the</strong> camel's back— it is some<br />

comfort to know that <strong>the</strong> British, French, and<br />

Italian Missions did splendid work for <strong>the</strong>se<br />

helpless, hungry, half-naked men.<br />

Somehow or o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y reached Valona, after<br />

leav<strong>in</strong>g more dead by <strong>the</strong> way, many dy<strong>in</strong>g as a<br />

result of eat<strong>in</strong>g too much after <strong>the</strong>ir long period<br />

of starvation and exhaustion—an <strong>in</strong>domitable<br />

band who had sacrificed all to <strong>the</strong> knowledge<br />

that so long as <strong>the</strong>y existed as an army <strong>the</strong><br />

liberation and union of <strong>the</strong> whole Serbian race<br />

was still a dream that might some day come<br />

true. And from Valona, as soon as possible,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y were shipped to Corfu by <strong>the</strong> Italians,<br />

fortunately, <strong>in</strong> spite of attacks by submar<strong>in</strong>es,<br />

without <strong>the</strong> loss of a s<strong>in</strong>gle Serb at sea.<br />

The condition <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong>y reached Corfu<br />

can only be described as one of utter exhaustion.<br />

Never before had so many and such pitiful<br />

wrecks of men been seen. One cannot th<strong>in</strong>k of<br />

<strong>the</strong>m without a lump <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> throat, and one can<br />

only regret that after all <strong>the</strong>ir terrible suffer<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

<strong>the</strong>y should have had at first some considerable<br />

hardships still to bear even when <strong>the</strong>y reached<br />

Corfu. The organization was not complete, and
