We had ano<strong>the</strong>r fam<strong>in</strong>e dur<strong>in</strong>g this period.<br />

This time it was spark<strong>in</strong>g plugs, but luckily<br />

supplies got through before it became serious.<br />

The dust was beastly. It powdered our noses<br />

and lay thick on our clo<strong>the</strong>s ; it sneaked <strong>in</strong><br />

under our goggles and made a stiff paste at <strong>the</strong><br />

corners of our mouths.<br />

We simply had to <strong>in</strong>sist on hav<strong>in</strong>g this pass<br />

to ourselves. When we began it was crowded<br />

with horse transport, and <strong>the</strong> blocks were worse<br />

than those that would happen at <strong>the</strong> Bank if<br />

<strong>the</strong>re were no men <strong>in</strong> blue <strong>the</strong>re to regulate <strong>the</strong><br />

traffic. It was impossible to regulate it here.<br />

There was always a jam at <strong>the</strong> place where two<br />

vehicles could not pass, and <strong>the</strong> horse transport<br />

was always cutt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> wood across<br />

country and spoil<strong>in</strong>g all our best-laid schemes.<br />

So we came to an arrangement by which we had<br />

<strong>the</strong> pass by day, and <strong>the</strong> horse transport had it<br />

to <strong>the</strong>mselves at night.<br />

As an illustration of how <strong>the</strong> M.T. live when<br />

<strong>the</strong>y get <strong>the</strong> chance it may be recorded that we<br />

had a splendid camp here. The road that led<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Officers' Mess we turned <strong>in</strong>to an avenue,<br />

marked out with fir branches stuck <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong><br />

ground, which looked like grow<strong>in</strong>g trees and<br />

lasted a remarkably long time. The Scottish<br />

Women's Hospital had an advanced station<br />

close by, and on several occasions when <strong>the</strong>ir
