attempts, found it impossible to do much<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st such formidable positions as Dobropoli,<br />

Vetrenik, and Kukurus, and <strong>the</strong>re <strong>the</strong>y were<br />

obliged to be content with hold<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir own.<br />

But <strong>the</strong>re was no stopp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Serbians <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Cema loop. Supported by French artillery,<br />

throughout October <strong>the</strong>y advanced <strong>in</strong>ch by<br />

<strong>in</strong>ch, fight<strong>in</strong>g heavily for every ga<strong>in</strong>. General<br />

Sarrail, see<strong>in</strong>g how th<strong>in</strong>gs were go<strong>in</strong>g, withdrew<br />

some of <strong>the</strong> Russians and <strong>the</strong> 17th Colonial<br />

French Division and sent <strong>the</strong>m to support <strong>the</strong><br />

Serbians under <strong>the</strong> command of <strong>the</strong> Serbian<br />

Voivode Mishitch, perhaps <strong>the</strong> most brilHant<br />

of a race of brilliant soldiers. These troops held<br />

chiefly <strong>the</strong> western sector of <strong>the</strong> loop.<br />

The fight<strong>in</strong>g cont<strong>in</strong>ued, always <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

ferocity. The Bulgarians understood only too<br />

well that grim game of chess Field-Marshal<br />

Mishitch was play<strong>in</strong>g among <strong>the</strong> Chuke heights.<br />

Every day <strong>the</strong> wounded came down from <strong>the</strong><br />

hills, on mules with cunn<strong>in</strong>gly contrived chairs<br />

and stretchers, and <strong>in</strong> rough, spr<strong>in</strong>gless supply<br />

and ammunition carts. But every day <strong>the</strong>re<br />

was ano<strong>the</strong>r hill ga<strong>in</strong>ed. The Serbian Army was<br />

forg<strong>in</strong>g far ahead of its Allied left ; Monastir<br />

was com<strong>in</strong>g nearer and nearer— and so long as<br />

it fell what did <strong>the</strong> price matter ?
