enemy's trenches on <strong>the</strong> crest of Hill 1050, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> Vardar Division pursued <strong>the</strong> enemy to<br />

Paralovo. On <strong>the</strong> same day, <strong>the</strong> 20th, <strong>the</strong> 17th<br />

French Division advanced one and a half<br />

kilometres and took Dobromir. The counter-<br />

attacks on <strong>the</strong> Vardar Division which, on <strong>the</strong><br />

2ist, followed this uncomfortable pressure on<br />

<strong>the</strong> enemy's left, were successfully beaten off.<br />

But <strong>the</strong> failure of <strong>the</strong> Allies to cont<strong>in</strong>ue to<br />

advance on <strong>the</strong>ir left and centre, bad wea<strong>the</strong>r<br />

and <strong>the</strong> grow<strong>in</strong>g strength of <strong>the</strong> enemy, began<br />

to have <strong>the</strong>ir natural effect upon <strong>the</strong> exhausted<br />

<strong>Serbs</strong> on <strong>the</strong> Right. However, on <strong>the</strong> 26th<br />

November <strong>the</strong> Morava Division and <strong>the</strong> French<br />

2nd Zouaves made <strong>the</strong>mselves masters for <strong>the</strong><br />

time of Hill 1050, after a bloody struggle,<br />

followed by several determ<strong>in</strong>ed counter-attacks.<br />

Though <strong>the</strong>re was no actual pause <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fight<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

though every day one side or <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

attacked or counter-attacked among that maze<br />

of cruel hills, now ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g or los<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> cost<br />

of much brave blood some slippery, rocky<br />

height that gave its possessors a momentary<br />

advantage, <strong>the</strong>re to all <strong>in</strong>tents and purposes<br />

<strong>the</strong> pursuit and <strong>the</strong> fight<strong>in</strong>g that followed <strong>the</strong><br />

tak<strong>in</strong>g of Monastir came to an end.<br />

There can be no question of to whom <strong>the</strong> fall<br />

of Monastir was due. It was a Serbian victory,
