Whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y walked or talked or sat, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

were always sp<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g — if that is <strong>the</strong> proper<br />

name for it. Fleece, white or black, is combed<br />

out <strong>in</strong>to a fluffy mass on a many-too<strong>the</strong>d square<br />

frame. This is placed on a long stick, or distaff,<br />

and by twist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> fleece <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir f<strong>in</strong>gers as<br />

it is turned by a heavy revolv<strong>in</strong>g bobb<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>y<br />

it <strong>in</strong>to a woollen thread. That is <strong>the</strong> best<br />

sp<strong>in</strong><br />

description of <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess I can manage.<br />

The women do noth<strong>in</strong>g but this wool work<br />

and women's ord<strong>in</strong>ary domestic duties. The<br />

men attend to <strong>the</strong> flocks entirely. They milk<br />

<strong>the</strong> sheep and <strong>the</strong> goats <strong>the</strong>mselves and cut<br />

firewood— and consider that a fair division of <strong>the</strong><br />

labour.<br />

The children were numerous, pretty and shy.<br />

Two of <strong>the</strong>m were strangely beautiful with<br />

vivid copper-red hair. Enquiries elicited <strong>the</strong><br />

children, it seemed, were too fair—<br />

The acquir<strong>in</strong>g of this <strong>in</strong>formation had one<br />

unexpected result. The <strong>in</strong>terpreter, Major-<br />

Doctor Pantovitch, our host, was a Serbian<br />

surgeon of some note. Directly it became known<br />

that he spoke Rumanian and was a doctor <strong>the</strong><br />

trouble began.
