fight. Some of <strong>the</strong> vans had to be towed up by<br />

hand-power as bluejackets tow a gun. Everybody<br />

had to lend a hand, and everybody nearly<br />

died of it before <strong>the</strong> trick was done. Then we<br />

found ourselves on <strong>the</strong> Gornichevo Pass—<br />

improved now out of all recognition, but at that<br />

time <strong>in</strong> a terrible state. Fortunately some<br />

<strong>Serbs</strong> employed on <strong>the</strong> road were encamped<br />

close by, and we turned <strong>the</strong>m out to help to<br />

push us up. This <strong>the</strong>y did with <strong>the</strong>ir usual<br />

will<strong>in</strong>gness to do anyth<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> English.<br />

Darkness came on, and, utterly exhausted,<br />

we camped for <strong>the</strong> night by <strong>the</strong> side of<br />

<strong>the</strong> road— and a very cold miserable night it<br />

was.<br />

At daybreak we resumed our journey, arriv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

at our camp<strong>in</strong>g-ground at Sorovich about<br />

midday, and at once start<strong>in</strong>g work.<br />

It was at Sorovich that <strong>the</strong> first death <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Company occurred. Apart from that sad<br />

<strong>in</strong>cident our stay <strong>the</strong>re was a very pleasant one.<br />

The site of <strong>the</strong> camp was excellent, and <strong>the</strong><br />

mounta<strong>in</strong> and lake scenery very beautiful. The<br />

village itself with its bright red roofs was not so<br />

<strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g at close quarters as it seemed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

distance. A great part of it was <strong>in</strong> ru<strong>in</strong>s from<br />

<strong>the</strong> last Balkan War, only <strong>the</strong> most squalid of<br />

its houses were <strong>in</strong>habited by natives, and<br />

hardly any shops were open. The o<strong>the</strong>r houses
