move a convoy a mile or two, and it was a<br />

of hun-<br />

frequent occurrence to see long str<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

dreds of vehicles held up while one disoblig<strong>in</strong>g<br />

lorry was got out of difficulties. Motor-lorries,<br />

like mules, always seem to give most trouble <strong>in</strong><br />

places where noth<strong>in</strong>g else can pass.<br />

Various attacks were made by <strong>the</strong> French,<br />

Russians, and Italians <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> pla<strong>in</strong>s which<br />

stretch onward from Fior<strong>in</strong>a to Monastir, and<br />

on <strong>the</strong> heights to <strong>the</strong> west. But no real success<br />

attended <strong>the</strong>se efforts. The Bulgars rema<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

on <strong>the</strong>ir fortified frontier l<strong>in</strong>e, and <strong>in</strong> consequence<br />

<strong>the</strong> brunt of <strong>the</strong> fight<strong>in</strong>g shifted once more to<br />

<strong>the</strong> Serbian Front, which was re<strong>in</strong>forced by what<br />

<strong>the</strong> French called <strong>the</strong>ir heavy light artillery.<br />

The British forces, who all this time had been<br />

mak<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>in</strong>gs as uncomfortable as possible for<br />

<strong>the</strong> enemy by raids, stunts, patrol engagements<br />

and air bomb<strong>in</strong>g, did what <strong>the</strong>y could to help.<br />

General Milne writes : ''In order fur<strong>the</strong>r to<br />

assist <strong>the</strong> progress of our Alhes towards Monas-<br />
