3.5 GREY LANGUR - Trachypithecus crepusculus
In 1995 and July-August 1997, two surveys were carried out by a VRTC expedition for the Vu Quang
Conservation Project (WWF) in the reserve. Grey langurs were reported based on interviews (VRTC, 1997).
Tuyen Hoa District (QUANG BINH)
Special use forest: None
Grey langur status: Unknown, last report unknown (museum specimen)(Fooden, 1996)
One male skull (IEBR 44) is reported to have been collected in Tuyen Hoa District (date and collector
unknown) (Fooden, 1996). The occurrence of the Grey langur was not reported by Lambert et al.
(1994) during their survey for endemic pheasants in the Khe Net area (north of the district).
Locations where Grey langurs are believed to be extinct
Phu Yen District (SON LA)
One adult female (IEBR 843/221(44)) and one male skin (IEBR 844/222) were collected in Phieng
Ban locality by Vi Van Nao in October 1963 (Fooden, 1996). In October-November 1999, a FFI team
visited the district (Ngo Van Tri & Long, 1999). A number of interviews were conducted (fifteen) but no
information was provided concerning the Grey langur.
Cuc Phuong National Park (NINH BINH, HOA BINH and THANH HOA)
Two skins, one adult female (ZMVNU 82) and one infant female (ZMVNU 83) were collected in October
1960 (collector unknown) in Cuc Phuong area (Fooden, 1996). Ratajszczak et al., (1990) reported
about two captive Grey langurs in Cuc Phuong National Park in 1989. These animals were captured
from a group of four individuals, while they were drinking in a stream on agriculture land, 500
meters from “Phu Long Village”, Nho Quan (=Hoang Long) District (according to the map provided in
the report, located in the border southeast of Cuc Phuong National Park). The local informants said
that no animals had been seen for many years prior to this.
Cuc Phuong has been the subject of a number of surveys. Despite this, there was no further records
of Grey langur in the park (Nadler, 1995a; Hill, 1999; T. Nadler, pers. comm.).
Pieng Luong village, Phong Lai Commune, Thuan Chau District (SON LA)
The species has not been seen for 15 years (interviews conducted during a FZS survey in 1999, L.
Baker, pers. comm., 2000).
Chieng Set village, Chieng Den Commune, Son La District (SON LA)
The species was last seen nearly 30 years ago (interviews conducted during a FZS survey in 1999, L.
Baker, pers. comm., 2000).
