4 DOUC LANGURS<br />

The lower jaw of a Black-shanked douc langur (the identification remains questionable) was seen in<br />

the area by a BirdLife and FIPI team in April 2000 (Tran Quang Ngoc et al., 2001). The species, locally<br />

named “con giac”, was reported as uncommon. The area is dominated by a dipterocarp forest habitat.<br />

Ea Kar District (DAK LAK)<br />

Special use forest: Partly included in Chu Hoa Nature Reserve<br />

Douc status: Provisional occurrence, last report in 1996 (Le Xuan Canh et al., 1997a)<br />

Species recorded: Pygathrix sp. (interview and specimen)<br />

In April and May 1997, during a survey conducted by IUCN and WWF for large mammals, two<br />

photographs of one captive animal in Buon Ba village were examined. According to the authors, the<br />

specimens fitted neither the black nor red forms. (Le Xuan Canh et al., 1997a). However, the succinct<br />

description given suggests that it was P. nigripes.<br />

Yok Don National Park (DAK LAK)<br />

Douc langur status: Provisional occurrence, last report 1994 (Ha Thang Long & Le Thien Duc, 2001)<br />

Species recorded: P. nigripes (museum specimen)<br />

One specimen of a young female Black-shanked douc langur was seen in the collection of Tay Nguyen<br />

University during a FZS survey in December 2001. According to the inventory of the collection the<br />

animal was bought about 1994 in Buon Me Thuot and hunted in Yok Don National Park.<br />

Ea Sup District (DAK LAK)<br />

Special use forest: None<br />

Douc status: Provisional occurrence, last report in 1996 (Le Xuan Canh, 1997a)<br />

Species recorded: P. nigripes (interview)<br />

According to the forest staff of Ye Lop Forest Enterprise, Ea Sup District, interviewed during a large mammal<br />

survey carried out by WWF and IUCN in June 1997, douc langurs may occur in Tieu Teo mountain<br />

(northeast of the district) (Le Xuan Canh, 1997a). According to Vu Ngoc Thanh (pers. comm., 2000), the<br />

form recognised was P. nigripes. The last dated sighting was in late 1996. The species was not recorded<br />

during a survey for the green peafowl in the area by BirdLife and IEBR in March 1998 (Brickle et al., 1998).<br />

Cu Jut District (DAK LAK)<br />

Special use forest: None, partly included in proposed extension of Yok Don National Park<br />

Douc status: Occurrence confirmed, last evidence in 1999 (Trinh Viet Cuong Ngo & Ngo Van Tri, 2000)<br />

Species recorded: P. nigripes (sighting); P. cinerea (interview)<br />

In December 1999, FFI conducted an elephant survey in the district (Trinh Viet Cuong & Ngo Van Tri,<br />

2000). Five doucs were observed on a single occasion near the Dak Klau Stream in secondary evergreen<br />
