3.6 INDOCHINESE SILVERED LANGUR - Trachypithecus germaini
1927 is listed from Tay Ninh (Thomas, 1929). Currently, only 41,000 ha of forest remain in Tay Ninh,
of which 24,000 ha are in deplorable condition. The forest in Nui Ba Den Nature Reserve is very small
and isolated by human settlements (Ngo Van Tri, pers. comm. 2000).
However, Indochinese Silvered langurs were recently recorded in the province close to the Cambodian
border during a BirdLife and FIPI survey. Indeed, one Indochinese Silvered langur tail was seen in Lo
Go Sa Mat Nature Reserve in December 1999 (Le Trong Trai, pers. comm. 2000). The species was
reported to still be present in the nature reserve by local informants.
Hon Chong Cultural and Historical Site and vicinity (KIEN GIANG)
Special use forest: Partly included in Cultural and Historical Site
Indochinese Silvered langur status: Occurrence confirmed, last evidence in 2001 (Ngo Van Tri, pers.
comm. 2001)
In this area probably only two groups occur (one group with 19 individuals inside the protected area
and one group with 12 indivuduals outside), which are isolated due to 10 km of agricultural land
with rice fields. (Hoang Minh Duc, pers. comm. 2000).
A troop of 18 individuals was seen close to the Hang Pagoda in August 2001 (Ngo Van Tri, pers.
comm., 2001). The area is predominantly karst limestone. Photographs of the animals were obtained.
Kien Luong Proposed Nature Reserve (KIEN GIANG)
Special use forest: Proposed nature reserve
Indochinese Silvered langur status: Occurrence confirmed, last evidence in 2001 (Ngo Van Tri, pers.
comm., 2001)
A troop of 9 individuals was seen in the limestone karst area of the proposed nature reserve (Ngo Van
Tri, pers. comm. 2001).
Locations where Indochinese Silvered langurs are believed to be extinct
Ngoc Hien District (CA MAU)
One infant female skin (IEBR 1530/M143) was collected in April 1977 by Truong Minh Hoat in Tan
An locality. No records have been made since and the species is believed to be locally extinct.
Discussed records
Tuyen Hoa District (QUANG BINH) ca. 17 O 53’N / 106 O 02’E
Dao Van Tien (undated MS), by identifying T. cristatus caudalis from Tuyen Hoa District (Quang Binh
Province) at 17 O 53’N of latitude, would extend the range of the species very far to the North. This
report is disputed by Fooden (1996). Such an occurrence would constitute evidence of parapatry of
the species with T. crepusculus. This issue deserves further investigation.
