Vietnam Primate Conservation Status Review Part 2: LEAF MONKEYS 108 3.6.4 Indochinese Silvered langur records in Vietnam Lao Bao (QUANG TRI) Special use forest: None Indochinese Silvered langur status: Unknown, last report in 1929 (museum specimen) (Napier, 1985; Fooden, 1996) One adult female skin (BMNH 1933.4.1.12), one juvenile male skin (BMNH 1933.4.1.13) and two male skins (FMNH 39157 and 39158) were collected in January 1929 by E. Poilane (Napier, 1985; Fooden, 1996). The reliability of this record was questioned by Osgood (1932). Dac Glei District (KON TUM) Special use forest: None Indochinese Silvered langur status: Provisional occurence, last report in 1991 (museum specimen) (Fooden, 1996) One female skin was collected in 1991 by Truong Son (FCXM unnumbered) (Fooden, 1996). Mom Ray National Park (KON TUM) Special use forest: National park Indochinese Silvered langur status: Provisional occurence, last report before 1995 (Lippold, 1995) The occurrence is mentioned without detailed information. Sa Thay and Dac To Districts (KON TUM) Special use forest: None Indochinese Silvered langur status: Provisional occurrence, last report before 1994 (Dang Huy Huynh et al., 1994) The occurrence is mentioned without detailed information. Chu Prong District (GIA LAI) Special use forest: Partly included in Chu Prong Nature Reserve Indochinese Silvered langur status: Provisional occurrence, last report in 2000 (specimen)(Tran Hieu Minh et al., in prep.) Remains of Indochinese Silvered langurs that had been hunted were seen by a BirdLife and FIPI team in April 2000. The area is dominated by a dipterocarp forest habitat. Kon Ha Nung area (GIA LAI) Special use forest: Partly included in Kong Cha Rang and Kon Ka Kinh Nature Reserves Indochinese Silvered langur status: Provisional occurrence, last report in 1999 (specimen)(Le Trong Trai, pers. comm., 2000)
3.6 INDOCHINESE SILVERED LANGUR - Trachypithecus germaini A feasibility study was conducted by FIPI to establish Kong Cha Rang Nature Reserve in April 1999 (Le Trong Trai, 1999b). One skull was seen by the team in a hunters’ house. The animal was reported to have been shot in Tram Lap Forest Enterprise, between Kong Cha Rang and Kon Ka Kinh Nature Reserves (Le Trong Trai, pers. comm., 2000). Cu M’lan, Ea Sup District (DAK LAK) Special use forest: None Indochinese Silvered langur status: Occurrence confirmed, last evidence in 1997 (Le Xuan Canh et al., 1997a) One group of about eight Indochinese Silvered langurs was seen near the Dak Rue River in June 1997 during a survey conducted by IUCN and WWF for large mammals (Le Xuan Canh et al., 1997a). The species was not recorded by BirdLife and IEBR during a survey for the green peafowl in the area from March to May 1998 (Brickle et al., 1998). Yok Don National Park (DAK LAK) Special use forest: National park Indochinese Silvered langur status: Occurrence confirmed, last evidence in 1997 (Le Xuan Canh et al., 1997a) Indochinese Silvered langurs are reported, based on indirect evidence (no further details are given), during an elephant survey carried out by WWF in February-March 1992 (Dawson et al., 1993). One group of at least four individuals was seen on the summit of Yok Don Hill in May 1997 during a survey conducted by IUCN and WWF for large mammals (Le Xuan Canh et al., 1997a). This locality is not reported as holding Indochinese Silvered langur in a survey for green peafowl by BirdLife and IEBR in March to May 1998 (Brickle et al., 1998). Cu Jut District (DAK LAK) Special use forest: partly included in proposed extension of Yok Don National Park Indochinese Silvered langur status: Occurrence confirmed, last evidence in 1999 (Ngo Van Tri & Trinh Viet Cuong, 2000) FFI conducted two elephant field surveys in the district. In December 1999, one group of at least 3 animals were seen in secondary evergreen forest in the western part of the district (12 O 44’47.7”N / 107 O 44’35.5”E) between 300 and 400 m a.s.l. (Trinh Viet Cuong & Ngo Van Tri, 1999). In April 2000, one group of 5 animals, including one infant with an orange/ yellow coat, was seen in semi-evergreen forest near the first record (12 O 45’09” N / 107 O 44’42”E) (Ngo Van Tri, 2000). Da Lat Plateau (DAK LAK, LAM DONG, KANH HOA and NINH THUAN) Special use forest: Partly included in Chu Yang Sinh and Bi Dup-Nui Ba Nature Reserves Indochinese Silvered langur status: Unknown, last report in 1908 (museum specimen) One juvenile male (BMNH 1908.11.1.5) was collected in 1908 by J. J. Vassal on Nui Ba Mountain (=Lang Bian) (Napier, 1985). 109
