Bu Dang District (BINH PHUOC)
Special use forest: None
Douc status: Occurence confirmed, last evidence in 1992 (Pham Nhat, pers. comm.)
Species recorded: P. nigripes (sighting)
Bu Gia Map Nature Reserve (BINH PHUOC)
Special use forest: Nature reserve
Douc status: Occurrence confirmed, last evidence 2001 (Ngo Van Tri, in prep.)
Species recorded: P. nigripes (sighting) P. nemaeus (unknown)
P. nemaeus is reported in the feasibility study of Bu Gia Map Nature Reserve (Anon., 1994d) but no
reference is given and the record is somewhat unreliable. During an elephant survey in January
2001, Ngo Van Tri reports the observation of 3 groups of Black-shanked douc langurs in the northern,
evergreen forested area of the Nature Reserve (Ngo Van Tri, in prep.).
FPD Binh Phuoc reported a confiscation of 11 Black-shanked douc langurs (9 adults, 2 subadults) in
June 1997 to the FZS survey team in December 2001. The animals most probably were hunted in the
nature reserve.
Loc Ninh District (BINH PHUOC)
Special use forest: None
Douc status: Occurrence confirmed, last evidence in 2001 (Ha Thang Long & Le Thien Duc, 2001)
Species recorded: P. nigripes (sighting, specimen)
During a FZS survey conducted in November/December 2001 an observation was made of a group of
5-6 individuals in Bao Dai-Bao Coc area (12 O 01' 804 N/106 O 53' 770 E).
The last sightings reported by locals were: April 2001 - 2 individuals close to Thiet Ke River; June
2001 - 2-3 individuals in Bao Coc area; a group of about 15 individuals near Ca-ra-di highland in
November; and 20 individuals in December near the same place.
One animal (about 10 kg) was trapped in Bao Nhom in August 2001. In November 2001 a local bought a
young one (700-800g) from a hunter. The animal survived only two days. Parts of a Black-shanked douc
langur (head, 2 hands, 2 feet, tail and scrotum) were found in a restaurant in Bu Dop in a bottle with brandy.
According to the owner of the restaurant, the douc langur was hunted in Bu Dop area in December 2001.
Locals reported a rapid decline in numbers of Black-shanked douc langurs, due to high hunting pressure.
Cat Tien National Park (DONG NAI, BINH PHUOC and LAM DONG)
Special use forest: National park
Douc status: Occurrence confirmed, last evidence in 2003 (G. Polet, pers.comm.)
Species recorded: P. nigripes (sighting)
In 2001 more than 20 observations were recorded, but mostly of small groups of 2-7 animals. Since
2000, there have only been 4 observations of 10-16 individuals in one group.
Frequently, Black-shanked doucs are observed on the Ba Sau trail (G. Polet, pers. comm.).
