5 SNUB-NOSED MONKEYS
✱ The second largest known population of snub-nosed monkey may be located in the Cham
Chu Nature Reserve (Chiem Hoa and Ham Yen Districts). A long term study with a special
emphasis on this species should be conducted. A community-based conservation programme
should be initiated as well as a training and capacity building programme for rangers to
improve law enforcement.
✱ To secure the population in Du Gia Nature Reserve, a strictly protected core zone through
consensus with local stakeholders need to be designated. A local patrol and monitoring group
should be recruited from local villagers. As this is the easiest location for sightings of the
Tonkin snub-nosed monkey, this site offers ideal conditions for long-term ecological studies.
5.1.6.3 Mitigation of impacts from dam construction
To mitigate potential impacts from the Gam river dam construction, the following measures should
be undertaken in collaboration with ‘Electricity of Vietnam Company’ (EVN), Song Da 9 construction
company and relevant government agencies at provincial and national level:
✱ Develop a financing mechanisms for the long-term protection of the Gam river watershed
and the Tonkin snub-nosed monkey with EVN.
✱ Employ and train additional rangers to oversee critical construction phases, vegetation
clearing, resettlement and operation phases.
✱ Control restaurants and bushmeat trade, conduct spot checks of vehicles moving out of
the area.
✱ Conduct regular awareness work among construction workers.
✱ Monitor the provision of coal for cooking by Song Da 9 construction company.
✱ Lobby for resettlement of villages out of Na Hang Nature Reserve.
