4 DOUC LANGURS
One infant skull (IEBR 43), one adult male (IEBR 432), one juvenile skull (IEBR 437) and one female
mandible (IEBR 497) were collected by Thai Khac Zieu in January 1964 in the Truong Bat locality
(=Truong Hat). One female skin (IEBR 433/M21) was collected in January 1964 (unknown collector)
and reported from Huong Khe District. One juvenile skull (IEBR 43/106) and one adult female skull
(IEBR 43/107, date and collector unknown) are also reported from the district.
A survey by a Hanoi University team observed one group of about 5 individuals in August 1974 in
Huong Dien Commune (Vu Ngoc Thanh, pers. comm.). Pham Nhat observed groups of 7 and 8
individuals respectively in July and August 1992 in the forests of Huong Khe District (Pham Nhat,
pers. comm. 2000).
Sightings were reported in the nature reserve during a survey for endemic pheasants, conducted in
June and July 1994 by NWF, IUCN, WWF and BirdLife (Lambert et al., 1994). In July and August
1997, doucs were recorded, based on interviews by scientists from VRTC (VRTC 1997). In December
2000, one sighting was recorded in the Hung Lau area during a monitoring programme (Pham Nhat
et al., 2000)
According to local hunters, the population has rapidly decreased in the last five years. For example,
over a 6-day survey in August 1995, Pham Nhat found no sign of this animal (Pham Nhat, pers.
comm., 2000).
Ke Go Nature Reserve (HA TINH)
Special use forest: Nature reserve
Douc status: Provisional occurrence, last report in 1995 (Le Trong Trai et al., 1996)
Species recorded: P. nemaeus (interview and specimen)
Two specimens of Red-shanked douc langur, one female skin (IEBR 42/440) and one adult female
skull (IEBR 441/49) were collected in January 1964 by Nguyen Lien, reportedly from the Ky Son
locality (Ky Anh District).
Ratajsczcak et al. (1990), reported from interviews with local hunters that douc langurs can be
found in primary and secondary forests in the vicinity of the southern and western shores of Ke Go
lake. This occurrence is also recorded by BirdLife and FIPI, on the basis of interviews conducted
during a field survey, carried out between April and August 1995 for the investment plan of Ho Ke
Go Nature Reserve (Le Trong Trai et al.,1996).
Human pressure on wildlife and its natural habitat is very high in Ke Go and it is unlikely that the
nature reserve contains a significant douc langur population.
Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park and vicinity (QUANG BINH)
Special use forest: Partly included in Phong Nha National Park
Douc status: Occurrence confirmed, last evidence in 2002 (Le Khac Quyet, 2002)
Species recorded: P. nemaeus (sighting)
In 1995, the area was surveyed with a specific focus on the Hatinh Langur (Pham Nhat et al.,
1996a). Three groups of Red-shanked douc langur were observed. One group (number of individuals
unknown) was seen in Truong Hoa Commune (northwest of the proposed park) and two other
groups were seen in Thung Nui Treo and Phong Nha villages, Son Trach Commune (east of the
park) with respectively 10 and 12-15 individuals. In addition, one captive animal was observed in
Ban Ruc (village), Truong Hoa Commune (northwest of the park).
