Locations where Delacour’s langurs are believed to be extinct
3.4 DELACOUR’S LANGUR - Trachypithecus delacouri
Nui Ke mountainous area and vicinity, Yen Thuy and Lac Son Districts (HOA BINH)
This area has very small and isolated limestone outcrops. Locals reported about 8 isolated limestone
hills where Delacour’s langur occurred in the past (Nui Ke, Quen Liep, Nui Chong Chang, Nui Hang
Nga, Nui Hang Gio, Nui Quang Khe, Nui Thong Bo and Nui Dam Hong).
The Delacour’s langur were extirpated around 1980. The population in this area was once about 70
individuals according to local information (Le Thien Duc, 2002).
Lang Chanh mountainous area, Lang Chanh, Ngoc Lac and Thuong Xuan Districts (THANH HOA)
Dao Van Tien (1985) listed one Delacour’s langur collected in Tan Phuc in March 1964. The information
given by Ratajszczak (1990) regarding the occurrence of the species in Thuong Xuan District probably
concerned the same limestone range in the northern part of the district.
During the survey conducted by the FZS in 1994 there was one sighting of two animals and, based on
information from hunters, it was estimated that 10-15 individuals lived in this area (Nadler, 1996b).
In a further survey in 2000 the hunters and local people interviewed verified that Delacour’s langurs
were already extirpated (Luong Van Hao, 2000c).
Mountainous area in vicinity of Cam Thach village, Cam Thuy District (THANH HOA)
During the survey conducted by the FZS in 2000 the hunters and local people interviewed verified that
Delacour’s langurs were extirpated in 1987 and the last animals were hunted (Luong Van Hao, 2000c).
Discussed records
Nghia Lo, Nghia Lo District (YEN BAI) 21 O 36' N / 104 O 31' E
The locality is mentioned in the Red Data Book (Ministry of Science, Techonology and Environment,
1992) but during a survey conducted by the FZS in 1995 there was no information about the occurrence
of Delacour’s langurs (Nadler, 1996b).
Son La mountainous area, Muong La, Son La, Mai Son, Thuan Chau and Moc Chau Districts (SON
LA) 20 O 30' - 21 O 30' N / 103 O 45' - 105 O 00' E
One report suggesting the occurrence of Delacour’s langurs (Nadler, 1996b) and one photograph of two
caught Delacour’s langurs allegedly from Son La limestone area were the basis to survey this large
area. If Delacour’s langurs occur - or occurred - in Son La, this province would represent the northwesternmost
area of the species’ range. The langurs in the photograph, circa 1968/69, were supposedly
from Mai Son District, thus an emphasis was placed on thoroughly surveying this district.
Every district FPD in Son La Province was interviewed and local FPD officials had never heard of
Delacour’s langurs occuring in Son La Province.
