Di Linh Plateau (LAM DONG)
Special use forest: Partly included in Nui Dai Binh Nature Reserve
Douc status: Occurrence confirmed, last evidence in 1999 (Vu Ngoc Thanh, pers. comm.)
Species recorded: P. nigripes (sighting and specimen)
In Di Linh (=Djiring), one adult male (BMNH) 1927.12.1.8), two infant males (BMNH) 1927.12.1.9
and 1927.12.1.15), two adult females (BMNH) 1927.12.1.10 and MNHN 1929.443), one infant female
skin (BMNH) 1927.12.1.11), one juvenile male (BMNH) 1927.12.1.14), 1 female (museum unknown)
and 3 skins unsexed (museum unknown) were collected by J. Delacour and H. P. Lowe in March
1927 at 1,200m a.s.l..
In June 1991, Eames & Robson (1993) observed this species twice. On the first occasion, one group,
of 10 to 15 individuals was seen on Nui Pantar at 1,350m a.s.l.. The second time, two groups of about
10 and 20 animals were seen on Deo Nui San at 1,200m a.s.l.. The species was also reported by local
hunters on Nui Braian and Nui Ta Tung. In the latter locality, one skin of an animal shot for meat was
seen in a village.
Pham Nhat observed one group of 22 individuals in Bao Loc District in December 1991 (Pham Nhat,
pers. comm.).
Lippold and Vu Ngoc Thanh surveyed the area on two occasions. In May 1998, several dead specimens
were seen in wildlife trader houses in Di Linh City. In November 1999, two groups of 15-20 individuals
were observed in the vicinity of Bao Loc (Vu Ngoc Thanh, pers. comm.).
One specimen, killed in Loc Bac Forest Enterprise (Bao Lam District) in 1997 was observed and
photographed by Andrew Tordoff (pers. comm., 2000) in March 2000 in a taxidermist’s house.
Nha Trang District (KHANH HOA)
Special use forest: None
Douc status: Unknown, last report in 1905 (museum specimen)
Species recorded: P. nigripes (specimen)
One adult male (BMNH 1906.11.6.1) was collected in November 1905 by J. J. Vassal and reported
from Bali in Nha Trang vicinity. Nothing is known about the status of doucs in Khanh Hoa Province.
Nui Chua Nature Reserve (NINH THUAN)
Special use forest: Nature Reserve
Douc status: Occurrence confirmed , last evidence in 2001 (Ha Thang Long, 2001)
Species recorded: P. nigripes (sighting and specimen)
During a survey conducted in April 2000, local informants stated that this sub-population of P. nigripes
may number as many as 100. The population size could not be confirmed, but a group of 25 individuals
was observed on the bank of Da Thau stream. Vu Ngoc Long (2001) concludes that probably the largest
sub-population of Black-shanked doucs in Vietnam probably occurs in Nui Chua Nature Reserve.
A FZS survey in August 2001 was conducted for a census of Black-shanked douc. One group of
about 45 individuals was observed and another one of 2 individuals. According to the information of
hunters, locals and rangers (more than 100 people) about 12 to 15 groups occur in the area with a
total of 500 to 700 individuals. The groups consist of about 20 to 70 individuals. Despite this number,
locals reported a markable decrease over the last ten years (Ha Thang Long, 2001).
