Vietnam Primate Conservation Status Review Part 2: LEAF MONKEYS
100
Ban Dan and Ban Phang villages, Muong Bang Commune, Mai Son District (SON LA)
Grey langur was described but had not been seen for 6 years (interviews conducted during a FZS
survey in 1999, L. Baker, pers. comm).
Ban Puon village, Chieng Mai Commune, Mai Son District (SON LA)
The last sighting was reported several years ago, and the species is probably now extinct in the area
(interviews conducted during a FZS survey in 1999, L. Baker, pers. comm., 2000,).
Ban Tam and Tu Buon villages, Chieng Ve Commune, Mai Son District (SON LA)
The species is described but last sightings are reported 10 to 20 years ago (interviews conducted
during a FZS survey in 1999, L. Baker, pers. comm., 2000).
Discussed records
Ky Thuong Nature Reserve (QUANG NINH) 21 O 05’-21 O 12’N/106 O 56’-107 O 13’E
Grey langurs are reported in the investment plan of Ky Thuong Nature Reserve, Quang Ninh Province.
A record so far to the east is questionable. During a visit to the reserve by BirdLife and FIPI in November
1999, seven informants claimed that no langurs occurred in the area (Tordoff et al., 2000b). However,
a Dao hunter reported to have seen this species (“Vooc xam”) in 1959, though it is now extinct.
Na Hang Nature Reserve (TUYEN QUANG) 22 O 16’-22 O 31’N/105 O 22’-105 O 29’E
Grey langur is reported based on interviews by Dang Huy Huynh & Hoang Minh Khien (1993) and
Boonratana (1999). This occurrence can be questioned. According to B. Martin (pers. comm. 2000),
information provided by local people is confused and does not provide good evidence and it is likely
that, if the species ever existed in Na Hang, it does not occur anymore. However, some areas in Na
Hang are quite inaccessible and the fauna living in these places is still unknown.
Du Gia Nature Reserve (HA GIANG) 22 O 49’-22 O 58’N/105 O 03’-105-11’E
Grey langurs were reported in the investment plan to establish Du Gia Nature Reserve (Anon., 1994c).
However, no references are given. Therefore this record is considered unreliable.
Phong Quang Nature Reserve (HA GIANG) 22 O 50’-23 O 04’N/104 O 50’-105-01’E
Grey langurs are reported in the investment plan for Phong Quang Nature Reserve (Anon., 1997b).
However, no reference is given.
Pa Co-Hang Kia Nature Reserve (HOA BINH) 20 O 41’-20 O 46’N/104 O 51’-105 O 01E
Grey langurs are reported in the feasibility study for Pa Co-Hang Kia Nature Reserve (Anon., 1993c).
However, no reference is given. Therefore, this record cannot be considered as reliable.
