Than Xa Nature Reserve (THAI NGUYEN) ca.21 O 49’N / 105 O 56’E
The species is believed to have occurred there in earlier years (Geissmann & Vu Ngoc Thanh, 2000).
Discussed records
Phong Quang Nature Reserve (HA GIANG) 22 O 57’N / 104 O 56’E
R. avunculus is reported in the investment plan for Phong Quang Nature Reserve (Anon., 1997b).
However, no reference is given. It was reported in interviews carried out during a recent FFI survey,
but the threat of landmines near the Chinese border prevented investigation in the forest (Le Trong
Dat, pers. comm.).
Tam Tao Nature Reserve (BAC KAN) 22 O 18’N / 105 O 35’E
In the official letter No. 102/CV-UB from Cho Don District People’s Committee proposing the Tam
Tao Nature Reserve, R. avunculus is quoted as present. Surveys in this area conducted by FFI/PARC
in January 2003 could not confirm the presence of the species. Hunters from Na Sam village reported
that Tonkin snub-nosed monkeys were present until 1975 and are now locally extinct. The habitat
has been seriously degraded, and the gazettement of a nature reserve is unjustified (Le Khac Quyet &
Trinh Dinh Hoang, 2003).
Dai Tu District (THAI NGUYEN) ca. 21 O 37’N / 105 O 38’E
R. avunculus is reported in Dai Tu District in the Red Data Book of Vietnam (Ministry of Science,
Technology and Environment, 1992). However, no references are given.
Hoanh Bo District (QUANG NINH) ca. 21 O 10’N / 107 O 00’E
One skull was reported to have been collected in Quang La Commune. Ratajsczczak et al. (1992)
considered the occurrence of snub-nosed monkeys in this locality as questionable. Their report noted
that it was likely that the skull had been kept by hunters in order to sell and that the animal was not
caught in the locality where it was collected. Furthermore, BirdLife and FIPI, who visited the district
in November 1999, affirmed that no informants were familiar with this species (Tordoff et al., 2000b).
Bac Kan (BAC KAN), Tuyen Quang (TUYEN QUANG) and Yen Bai (YEN BAI)
Specimens were collected in Bac Kan (=Bach Thong) (Napier, 1985; ZMVNU 147), in Tuyen Quang
(Lapin et al., 1965) and Yen Bai (Napier, 1985). However, these locations present the main cities of the
provinces and, therefore, we cannot put forward any conclusions about the exact provenance of the
specimens.
