Several museum specimens come from the area. One adult female (AMNH 69556), one adult male
(ZRC 4-547) and one juvenile male (ZRC 4-548) were collected in March 1919 by C. B. Kloss in Don
Duong (=Dran). One adult male (AMNH 69555) was collected by C. B. Kloss in April 1919 at 1,500m
a.s.l. in Da Lat. One juvenile male (FMNH 46509) was collected by Osgood in February 1937 on Nui
Ba (=Nui Lang Bian) at 1,500m a.s.l..
The species was also reported by local hunters on Hon Nga-Cong Troi-Bi Doup massif during a
survey conducted by Eames & Robson (1993) in the area in June 1991. Eames & Nguyen Cu (1994)
reported that douc langurs were heard on Nui Bi Dup (=Bi Doup) at 2,000m a.s.l. in December 1993
during the feasibility study to establish Thuong Da Nhim Nature Reserve (currently included in Bi
Dup-Nui Ba Nature Reserve). In January 1994 the same team observed two individuals then one
group of 18 individuals, with at least two females nursing young, along Ea K’tour in Chu Yang Sin
Nature Reserve.
During a survey conducted for large carnivores in November 1994, Le Xuan Canh (1995a) reported a
sighting of doucs on Bi Dup Massif but provided no additional details.
Lippold and Vu Ngoc Thanh surveyed the area on two occasions. In May 1998, several dead specimens
were seen in wildlife trader houses in Da Lat and Duc Trong Cities. One living animal, kept as a pet,
was seen in Da Lat City (Vu Ngoc Thanh, pers. comm.).
The Da Lat Plateau is the origin of the type and paratypes of the P. n. moi described by Kloss in 1926:
two adult males (BMNH) 1908.11.1.2 and 1908.11.1.3) and one adult female (BMNH) 1908.11.1.4)
collected by Dr Vassal in June 1908 on Nui Ba (=Nui Lang Bian); one adult male (BMNH) 1947.1501),
two adult females (ZRC 4-549 and 4-550), one infant male (ZRC 4-551) and one juvenile male (ZRC 4-
552) collected by C. B. Kloss in April 1919 at 1,800m a.s.l. on Nui Ba (=Nui Lang Bian).
A ranger of the Bi Dup-Nui Nature Reserve and locals reported to a FZS survey team in July 2002 (Ha
Thang Long, 2002) of recent sightings of Black-shanked douc langurs, occassionally in large groups.
Another group of 40-50 individuals was seen in December 2001 on the Lang Bi An Mountain and
aother group of 70-100 individuals in May 2002 in the Cong Trai area.
