Grey-shanked douc langurs were recorded in Tra My District from interviews by Vu Ngoc Thanh
(pers. comm.) during two surveys by the FPD and IEBR for tigers in May 1998 and March 1999.
Several skulls were observed in hunter’s houses.
From March to June 1999, BirdLife and FIPI conducted a feasibility study to establish Ngoc Linh
Nature Reserve (Tordoff et al., 2000a). Doucs were observed on a single occasion, however, the taxonomy
of these animals could not be assigned with any certainty to either cinerea or nigripes (A. Tordoff,
pers. comm., 2000). There are no records from the surveys conducted in 1996 and 1998 in Ngoc Linh
Nature Reserve (Le Trong Trai & Richardson, 1999b).
From March 1999 to September 1999, J. Harding (Australian National University) conducted a survey
of the communes Tra Doc, Tra Bui, Tra Don and Tra Mai and recorded Grey-shanked douc observations
from locals. Skulls of Grey-shanked doucs were collected from Tra Bui, Tra Doc and Tra Don (Harding
& Groves, 2001).
During a FZS survey in June 2000 three skulls were collected and indentifyied as cinerea. Sightings
by villagers confirmed that the population is decreasing.
Tra Bong District (QUANG NGAI)
Special use forest: None
Douc status: Provisional occurence, last report in 2000 (Ha Thang Long, 2000)
Species recorded: P. cinerea (interview)
During a FZS survey in June 2000, observations of Grey-shanked douc langurs were reported from
locals and hunters in Tra Bong Disrict (Ha Thang Long, 2000).
Ba To District (QUANG NGAI)
Special use forest: Partly included in Ba To Cultural and Historical Site
Douc status: Occurrence confirmed, last evidence in 2000 (Ha Thang Long, 2000)
Species recorded: P. cinerea (sighting and living specimen)
The EPRC received two confiscated Grey-shanked doucs (January and August 1997; Nadler, 2000)
which were poached in Ba To District.
During a FZS survey conducted in June 2000, more detailed information was collected. A group of 7
to 10 individuals was seen in the Goi Mo mountains. Following records from hunters and locals it is
estimated that about 8 groups (Ba To, Goi Keng mountain, Goi Ru mountain, Goi Mo mountain) with
a total of 100 to 140 animals live in this area.
An Lao District (BINH DINH)
Special use forest: None
Douc status: Occurence confirmed, last evidence in 2001 (Nadler, pers. comm.)
Species recorded: P. cinerea (interview and living specimen)
The EPRC received four confiscated Grey-shanked douc langurs (April 1996, August 1998, December
2000, February 2001; Nadler, 2000; Nadler in prep.) which were poached in An Lao District.
During a FZS survey conducted in May and June 2000 more detailed information of was collected. The
species is well known in the area but also heavily hunted. The doucs are obviously easy to hunt in the
