Vietnam Primate Conservation Status Review Part 2: LEAF MONKEYS
7.5 Education and awareness building
The development of education and awareness building programmes must be sensitive to the specific
educational needs of both local- and national-level target audiences. Locally targeted programmes
working in communities adjacent to areas identified as priorities for primate conservation must address
the needs of adults as well as children. Specific interventions should focus on concepts of extinction
and basic ecology as well as seeking to generate and enhance the intrinsic value of living primates.
On a national level there is great potential to generate support for primate protection through media
campaigns in press, televison and other popular media such as postage stamps and postcards. Many
Vietnamese are not aware of the primate diversity in their country, nor of the threats currently facing
primates nationally.
7.6 Research and surveys
The present database is far from exhaustive and must be completed and modified following the
results of further surveys. The authors wish for this work to be a benchmark for future national
monitoring of threatened leaf-monkeys and gibbons.
Several areas of high potential conservation value for leaf-monkeys and gibbons are both poorly
surveyed and under-represented in the current protected area network. Further surveys are
recommended in each species chapter. However, resulting from this work, among all the areas it is
suggested that further primate surveys will be highly useful in the following provinces for the following
target species:
Ha Giang: Rhinopithecus avunculus, Trachypithecus francoisi, Nomascus sp.
Kon Tum, Gia Lai: Pygathrix sp., Trachypithecus germaini, Nomascus gabriellae
Lam Dong: Pygathrix nigripes, Trachypithecus germaini, Nomascus gabriellae
