In Ai Thuong, local reports claimed that groups of Delacour’s langurs used to come to the cliffs just
above the village, most probably one group with 5 individuals. Since 1994, the village of Ai Thuong,
in cooperation with Luong Noi Village and a district organization, have been protecting this forest
area in a local programme. However, it is not clear how effective this protection has been for the
existence of the langurs.
Delacour’s langur status: Provisional occurrence, last report 1999 (Baker, 1999)
Delacour’s langurs were discovered to occur here during the FZS survey in 1999.
It is a small and isolated limestone complex surrounded by the Ma River. The occurrence of Delacour’s
langurs was reported by FPD rangers and locals. One langur was hunted in 1990 and the hunter still
kept a part of the white fur of the hind quarter. The most recent sighting of one group with 11
individuals were as made in April 1999.
Delacour’s langur status: Provisional occurrence, last report 1999 (Luong Van Hao, 1999b)
Delacour’s langurs were discovered in this area during the FZS survey in 1999. The area included 4
localities (Ngoc Lau Village; Khu Thuong, Tu Do Village and Lang Dam, Luong Noi Village).
According to local interviews 1 group with 5-7 individuals exists close to the boundary of Thach Lam
Village (Thach Tuong mountainous area). Another group close to Khu Thuong with 2-3 individuals
was extirpated around 1990.
Around Tu Do Village there were 4 groups with around 30 individuals until 1994. Now the langurs
are extirpated in this area. In Lang Dam, Luong Noi Village the langurs are well known. The most
recent sightings were made in 1999. Two sleeping sites were identified and checked, both were
possibly used by the same group. Fresh faeces were found at both sites.
Thach Tuong mountainous area, Thach Thanh District (THANH HOA)
Special use forest: None
Delacour’s langur status: Provisional occurrence, last report 1999 (interview) (Baker, 1999)
Delacour’s langurs were discovered to occur here during the FZS survey in 1999.
On the north side of Thach Tuong, the forest is connected with the westernmost tip of Cuc Phuong
National Park and is only separated by a dirt road along a small stream. But in the adjacent part of
the national park the Delacour’s langurs are probably already extirpated (Luong Van Hao, 2000b).
A hunter reported one group of Delacour’s langurs with 5 individuals. He knew the sleeping cave and
had tried to catch this group several times.
