Vietnam Primate Conservation Status Review Part 2: LEAF MONKEYS
The last evidence was a direct observation on 25-26/2/2001 of a group of 5-6 individuals in a
sleeping place (Nadler, pers. comm., 2001).
In this area information indicates two different forms of langurs: one with white cheeks and a totally
black one. Surprisingly, a totally black one has never been hunted.
The animals observed on the 25. and 26.2.01 were considered by hunters to be the all black form and
the hunter accompanying the survey team insisted that the animals were all black. However, the
observations were made at dusk and those member of the survey team equipped with binoculars
could clearly spot the white cheeks.
Recent unpublished reports
During recent FFI surveys in Ha Giang Province, Francois’ langurs have been reported from Xin Man,
Bac Quang, Quan Ba and Bac Me Districts (Luong Van Hao, pers. comm.; Le Trong Dat pers. comm.).
Further surveys are planned in these areas to assess the size of the population, the threats and to
design threat mitigation strategies.
Locations where Francois’ langurs are believed to be extinct:
Ban Thi Commune, Cho Don District (BAC KAN)
One juvenile female skull (IEBR 1474) was collected in November 1976 by Truong Minh Hoat, Ban
Thi Commune. Two skins (male and female, ZMVNU 96 and 97) were collected in the same locality
(date and collector unknown) (Fooden, 1996). FFI surveys conducted in October and November 1999
in the commune did not obtain any reliable information about the occurrence of Francois’ langur
(Dang Ngoc Can & Nguyen Truong Son, 1999).
One juvenile animal was collected in 1927 in Bach Thong district by Delacour and Lowe (Thomas, 1928)
Minh Tien, Huu Lung District (LANG SON)
Two adults (BMNH 1927.12.1.16 and 1927.12.1.17) were collected in January 1927 by J. Delacour
and W. P. Lowe in Lang Son Province (Napier, 1985). One adult female skull (ZMVNU 95) was collected
in June 1964 (unknown collector) in the Minh Tien locality (Fooden, 1996). Minh Tien Commune is
located in an area south of Huu Lung District. The natural habitat around Minh Tien is largely
fragmented and it is unlikely that it supports a significant population of langurs. According to the
survey conducted by Frontier in Huu Lien Nature Reserve (north of Huu Lung District) T. francoisi
may be extirpated in this area (T. Osborn, pers. comm., 2000).
Linh Thong Commune, Dinh Hoa District (THAI NGUYEN)
One juvenile male (ZMVNU 88/791) was collected in May 1967 by Pham Mong Giao, Linh Thong
Commune (Fooden, 1996). The same individual is most probably also mentioned by Dao Van Tien
(1990). No information was obtained in October 1999 during the FFI survey in the area (Dang Ngoc
Can & Nguyen Truong Son, 1999).
