Voluntary Withdrawal<br />
A student who withdraws in good<br />
standing after completion <strong>of</strong> at<br />
least one semester at the law<br />
school may return if the amount <strong>of</strong><br />
time the student will have been<br />
absent from the school since the<br />
student's first matriculation does<br />
not exceed three years. The school<br />
reserves the right to raise questions<br />
as to character which have arisen<br />
during the interim and to refuse<br />
readmission on these grounds, subject<br />
to the right <strong>of</strong> the student to<br />
petition the Administrative Committee<br />
for readmission.<br />
A student who withdraws in<br />
good standing after completion <strong>of</strong><br />
at least one semester <strong>of</strong> law school,<br />
but who does not satisfy this requirement<br />
as to time, is not entitled<br />
to be readmitted but may be<br />
by the Administrative Committee,<br />
subject to such conditions as the<br />
committee may impose. A student<br />
who withdraws before the completion<br />
<strong>of</strong> one semester is not entitled<br />
to be readmitted but may be admitted<br />
as a new student by the<br />
Admissions Committee.<br />
Voluntary withdrawal requires<br />
the approval <strong>of</strong> the dean. A student<br />
who drops out <strong>of</strong> the law<br />
school without this approval after<br />
the beginning <strong>of</strong> a semester for<br />
which the student has registered<br />
will be deemed to remain enrolled<br />
in his or her courses. Failure to<br />
take the examination or otherwise<br />
complete a course satisfactorily will<br />
result in a grade <strong>of</strong> 55 (F) in the<br />
course.<br />
Privacy <strong>of</strong> Records<br />
Privacy <strong>of</strong> student records is assured<br />
by the Family Educational<br />
Rights and Privacy Act <strong>of</strong> 1974;<br />
the act provides for student access<br />
to his/her education records maintained<br />
by the school, challenge to<br />
content <strong>of</strong> the records and control<br />
<strong>of</strong> disclosure <strong>of</strong> the records. Details<br />
about the act and the school's<br />
compliance with its provisions may<br />
be obtained in the dean's <strong>of</strong>fice.<br />
Honors and Prizes<br />
Order <strong>of</strong> the Coif is a national law<br />
school honor society founded to<br />
encourage scholarship and to advance<br />
the ethical standards <strong>of</strong> the<br />
legal pr<strong>of</strong>ession. Only students<br />
standing among the first tenth <strong>of</strong><br />
the senior class are eligible for<br />
membership. Selection <strong>of</strong> seniors<br />
for the <strong>Maryland</strong> chapter <strong>of</strong> the<br />
order is held during spring semester,<br />
immediately prior to commencement.<br />
Graduation with Honor is determined<br />
by the Faculty Council and<br />
may be awarded to students who<br />
meet requirements for graduation<br />
and who attain a weighted cumulative<br />
average <strong>of</strong> 79.0 or better in all<br />
work done at the law school, and<br />
are in the top one-third <strong>of</strong> the<br />
combined day and evening graduating<br />
class.<br />
The Sam Allen Memorial Prize, established<br />
by the day division class<br />
<strong>of</strong> 1950 in memory <strong>of</strong> their classmate,<br />
Harry Samuel Allen, is<br />
awarded annually to a member <strong>of</strong><br />
the graduating class who has demonstrated<br />
outstanding qualities <strong>of</strong><br />
leadership and scholarship.<br />
The American Jurisprudence Prizes,<br />
sponsored by <strong>Law</strong>yers Cooperative<br />
Publishing Company and the<br />
Bancr<strong>of</strong>t-Whitney Company, are<br />
given to the top students in various<br />
courses.
