Antitrust <strong>Law</strong> (3)<br />
This course deals with the regulation<br />
<strong>of</strong> competition, monopoly<br />
and restraints <strong>of</strong> trade by federal<br />
antitrust statutes. Primarily, it is a<br />
study <strong>of</strong> the Supreme Court cases<br />
interpreting these statutes toward<br />
the goal <strong>of</strong> preserving and fostering<br />
the competitive economic system.<br />

Antitrust and Health Care <strong>Law</strong><br />
Seminar* (3)<br />
This seminar will consider the impact<br />
<strong>of</strong> the antitrust laws on the<br />
delivery <strong>of</strong> services in the health<br />
care industry. Attention will be<br />
paid to the potential liability <strong>of</strong><br />
doctors, hospitals and third party<br />
payers. Particular focus also will be<br />
placed on the policy question <strong>of</strong><br />
whether the application <strong>of</strong> traditional<br />
antitrust law principles increases<br />
consumer welfare and, if<br />
so, at what cost.<br />

Arms Control and the <strong>Law</strong><br />
Seminar* (3)<br />
This seminar will examine the role<br />
<strong>of</strong> law, lawyers and the legal process<br />
in arms control. In addition to<br />
introducing the student to nuclear<br />
test ban negotiations, the Non-<br />
Proliferation Treaty, Strategic Arms<br />
Limitation Talks, the Anti-Ballistic<br />
Missile Treaty and the Strategic<br />
Defense Initiative, the seminar will<br />
emphasize the significant challenges<br />
facing the lawyer in drafting<br />
and negotiating a treaty.<br />

Asper Fellowship (2) or (3)<br />
Through this fellowship, named in<br />
memory <strong>of</strong> the late Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Lewis<br />
D. Asper, students may earn credits<br />
for supervised law-related work<br />
with state and federal government<br />
lawyers and judges and with a<br />
limited number <strong>of</strong> other approved<br />
placements.<br />
As a general rule students are<br />
limited to a single two-credit Asper<br />
during their law school careers.<br />
However, students clerking for federal<br />
judges and state appellate<br />
judges may earn two credits per semester<br />
for two semesters or three<br />
credits for one semester. To earn<br />
two credits, students are expected<br />
to devote 10 hours per week during<br />
the semester (or 20 hours per week<br />
during the summer session) to<br />
their Asper placement. A threecredit<br />
Asper requires 16 to 20<br />
hours per week (or 32 to 40 hours<br />
during the summer). All work is<br />
on a pass/fail basis.<br />
