military deception — Actions executed to deliberately mislead adversary military,<br />

paramilitary, or violent extremist organization decision makers, thereby causing the<br />

adversary to take specific actions (or inactions) that will contribute to the<br />

accomplishment of the friendly mission. Also called MILDEC. (JP 3-13.4)<br />

Military Department — One of the departments within the Department of Defense created<br />

by the National Security Act of 1947, as amended. Also called MILDEP. See also<br />

Department of the Air Force; Department of the Army; Department of the Navy.<br />

military engagement — Routine contact and interaction between individuals or elements of<br />

the Armed Forces of the United States and those of another nation’s armed forces, or<br />

foreign and domestic civilian authorities or agencies to build trust and confidence, share<br />

information, coordinate mutual activities, and maintain influence. (JP 3-0)<br />

military geography — The specialized field of geography dealing with natural and<br />

manmade physical features that may affect the planning and conduct of military<br />

operations.<br />

military government — See civil affairs.<br />

military health system — A health system that supports the military mission by fostering,<br />

protecting, sustaining, and restoring health and providing the direction, resources,<br />

health care providers, and other means necessary for promoting the health of the<br />

beneficiary population. (JP 4-<strong>02</strong>)<br />

military information support operations — Planned operations to convey selected<br />

information and indicators to foreign audiences to influence their emotions, motives,<br />

objective reasoning, and ultimately the behavior of foreign governments, organizations,<br />

groups, and individuals in a manner favorable to the originator’s objectives. Also<br />

called MISO. (JP 3-13.2)<br />

military information support operations impact indicators — An observable event or a<br />

discernible subjectively determined behavioral change that represents an effect of a<br />

military information support operations activity on the intended foreign target audience<br />

at a particular point in time. (JP 3-13.2)<br />

Military Intelligence Board — A decision-making forum which formulates Department of<br />

Defense intelligence policy and programming priorities. Also called MIB. See also<br />

intelligence. (JP 2-0)<br />

military intervention — The deliberate act of a nation or a group of nations to introduce its<br />

military forces into the course of an existing controversy. (JP 3-0)<br />

military journalist — A US Service member or Department of Defense civilian employee<br />

providing photographic, print, radio, or television command information for military<br />

internal audiences. See also command information. (JP 3-61)<br />
