sector air defense commander — Commander subordinate to an area/regional air defense<br />

commander, who is responsible for air and missile defenses in the assigned sector and<br />

exercises authorities delegated by the area/regional air defense commander. Also<br />

called SADC. (JP 3-01)<br />

security — 1. Measures taken by a military unit, activity, or installation to protect itself<br />

against all acts designed to, or which may, impair its effectiveness. (JP 3-10) 2. A<br />

condition that results from the establishment and maintenance of protective measures<br />

that ensure a state of inviolability from hostile acts or influences. (JP 3-10) 3. With<br />

respect to classified matter, the condition that prevents unauthorized persons from<br />

having access to official information that is safeguarded in the interests of national<br />

security assistance — Group of programs authorized by the Foreign Assistance Act of<br />

1961, as amended, and the Arms Export Control Act of 1976, as amended, or other<br />

related statutes by which the United States provides defense articles, military training,<br />

and other defense-related services by grant, loan, credit, or cash sales in furtherance of<br />

national policies and objectives. Security assistance is an element of security<br />

cooperation funded and authorized by Department of State to be administered by<br />

Department of Defense/Defense Security Cooperation Agency. Also called SA. See<br />

security classification — A category to which national security information and material is<br />

assigned to denote the degree of damage that unauthorized disclosure would cause to<br />

national defense or foreign relations of the United States and to denote the degree of<br />

protection required. There are three such categories: top secret, secret, and<br />

security clearance — An administrative determination by competent authority that an<br />

individual is eligible for access to classified information. (JP 1-0)<br />

security cooperation — All Department of Defense interactions with foreign defense<br />

establishments to build defense relationships that promote specific US security<br />

interests, develop allied and friendly military capabilities for self-defense and<br />

multinational operations, and provide US forces with peacetime and contingency<br />

access to a host nation. Also called SC. See also security assistance. (JP 3-22)<br />

security cooperation organization — All Department of Defense elements located in a<br />

foreign country with assigned responsibilities for carrying out security<br />

assistance/cooperation management functions. It includes military assistance<br />

advisory groups, military missions and groups, offices of defense and military<br />

cooperation, liaison groups, and defense attaché personnel designated to perform<br />

security assistance/cooperation functions. Also called SCO. (JP 3-22)<br />
