deployment — The rotation of forces into and out of an operational area. See also<br />

deployment health surveillance — The regular or repeated collection, analysis, archiving,<br />

interpretation, and distribution of health-related data used for monitoring the health of a<br />

population or of individuals, and for intervening in a timely manner to prevent, treat, or<br />

control the occurrence of disease or injury, which includes occupational and<br />

environmental health surveillance and medical surveillance subcomponents. (JP 4-<strong>02</strong>)<br />

deployment order — A planning directive from the Secretary of Defense, issued by the<br />

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, that authorizes and directs the transfer of forces<br />

between combatant commands by reassignment or attachment. Also called DEPORD.<br />

deployment planning — Operational planning directed toward the movement of forces and<br />

sustainment resources from their original locations to a specific operational area for<br />

conducting the joint operations contemplated in a given plan. See also deployment;<br />

depot — 1. supply — An activity for the receipt, classification, storage, accounting, issue,<br />

maintenance, procurement, manufacture, assembly, research, salvage, or disposal of<br />

material. 2. personnel — An activity for the reception, processing, training,<br />

assignment, and forwarding of personnel replacements. (JP 4-0)<br />

depot maintenance — That maintenance performed on materiel requiring major overhaul<br />

or a complete rebuild of parts, assemblies, subassemblies, and end-items, including the<br />

manufacture of parts, modifications, testing, and reclamation as required. Depot<br />

maintenance serves to support lower categories of maintenance by providing technical<br />

assistance and performing that maintenance beyond their responsibility. Depot<br />

maintenance provides stocks of serviceable equipment by using more extensive<br />

facilities for repair than are available in lower level maintenance activities.<br />

designated planning agent — The commander responsible for planning, coordinating, and<br />

executing military taskings in civil emergencies for a particular branch or agency of the<br />

Department of Defense. (JP 3-28)<br />

design basis threat — The threat against which an asset must be protected and upon which<br />

the protective system’s design is based. It is the baseline type and size of threat that<br />

buildings or other structures are designed to withstand. The design basis threat includes<br />

the tactics aggressors will use against the asset and the tools, weapons, and explosives<br />

employed in these tactics. Also called DBT. (JP 3-07.2)<br />
