security countermeasures — Those protective activities required to prevent espionage,<br />

sabotage, theft, or unauthorized use of classified or controlled information, systems, or<br />

material of the Department of Defense. See also counterintelligence. (JP 2-01.2)<br />

security force assistance — The Department of Defense activities that contribute to unified<br />

action by the US Government to support the development of the capacity and capability<br />

of foreign security forces and their supporting institutions. Also called SFA. (JP 3-22)<br />

security forces — Duly constituted military, paramilitary, police, and constabulary forces of<br />

a state. (JP 3-22)<br />

security review — The process of reviewing information and products prior to public<br />

release to ensure the material will not jeopardize ongoing or future operations. See<br />

also security. (JP 3-61)<br />

security sector reform — A comprehensive set of programs and activities undertaken to<br />

improve the way a host nation provides safety, security, and justice. Also called SSR.<br />

security service — Entity or component of a foreign government charged with<br />

responsibility for counterespionage or internal security functions. (JP 2-01.2)<br />

sedition — Willfully advocating or teaching the duty or necessity of overthrowing the US<br />

government or any political subdivision by force or violence. See also<br />

counterintelligence. (JP 2-01.2)<br />

segregation — In detainee operations, the removal of a detainee from other detainees and<br />

their environment for legitimate purposes unrelated to interrogation, such as when<br />

necessary for the movement, health, safety, and/or security of the detainee, the<br />

detention facility, or its personnel. (JP 3-63)<br />

seize — To employ combat forces to occupy physically and to control a designated area.<br />

seizures — In counterdrug operations, includes drugs and conveyances seized by law<br />

enforcement authorities and drug-related assets (monetary instruments, etc.) confiscated<br />

based on evidence that they have been derived from or used in illegal narcotics<br />

activities. See also counterdrug operations; law enforcement agency. (JP 3-07.4)<br />

Selected Reserve — Those units and individuals within the Ready Reserve designated by<br />

their respective Services and approved by the Joint Chiefs of Staff as so essential to<br />

initial wartime missions that they have priority over all other Reserves. Selected<br />

Reservists actively participate in a Reserve Component training program. The Selected<br />

Reserve also includes persons performing initial active duty for training. See also<br />
