theater of operations — An operational area defined by the geographic combatant<br />

commander for the conduct or support of specific military operations. Also called TO.<br />

theater of war — Defined by the President, Secretary of Defense, or the geographic<br />

combatant commander as the area of air, land, and water that is, or may become,<br />

directly involved in the conduct of major operations and campaigns involving combat.<br />

theater patient movement requirements center — The activity responsible for<br />

intratheater patient movement management (medical regulating and aeromedical<br />

evacuation scheduling), the development of theater-level patient movement plans and<br />

schedules, the monitoring and execution in concert with the Global Patient Movement<br />

Requirements Center. Also called TPMRC. (JP 4-<strong>02</strong>)<br />

theater special operations command — A subordinate unified command established by a<br />

combatant commander to plan, coordinate, conduct, and support joint special<br />

operations. Also called TSOC. See also special operations. (JP 3-05)<br />

theater strategy — An overarching construct outlining a combatant commander’s vision<br />

for integrating and synchronizing military activities and operations with the other<br />

instruments of national power in order to achieve national strategic objectives. See also<br />

National Military Strategy; National Security Strategy; strategy. (JP 3-0)<br />

theater support contract — A type of contingency contract that is awarded by contracting<br />

officers in the operational area serving under the direct contracting authority of the<br />

Service component, special operations force command, or designated joint head of<br />

contracting activity for the designated contingency operation. See also external<br />

support contract; systems support contract. (JP 4-10)<br />

thermal crossover — The natural phenomenon that normally occurs twice daily when<br />

temperature conditions are such that there is a loss of contrast between two adjacent<br />

objects on infrared imagery. (JP 3-09.3)<br />

thermal radiation — 1. The heat and light produced by a nuclear explosion. 2.<br />

Electromagnetic radiations emitted from a heat or light source as a consequence of its<br />

temperature. (JP 3-41)<br />

thorough decontamination — Decontamination carried out by a unit, with or without<br />

external support, to reduce contamination on personnel, equipment, materiel, and/or<br />

working areas equal to natural background or to the lowest possible levels, to permit<br />

the partial or total removal of individual protective equipment and to maintain<br />

operations with minimum degradation. This may include terrain decontamination<br />

beyond the scope of operational decontamination. See also immediate<br />
