supporting operations — In amphibious operations, those operations conducted by forces<br />

other than those conducted by the amphibious force. See also amphibious force;<br />

supporting plan — An operation plan prepared by a supporting commander, a subordinate<br />

commander, or an agency to satisfy the requests or requirements of the supported<br />

commander’s plan. See also supported commander; supporting commander.<br />

support items — Items subordinate to or associated with an end item (i.e., spares, repair<br />

parts, tools, test equipment, and sundry materiel) and required to operate, service,<br />

repair, or overhaul an end item.<br />

suppression — Temporary or transient degradation by an opposing force of the<br />

performance of a weapons system below the level needed to fulfill its mission<br />

objectives. (JP 3-01)<br />

suppression of enemy air defenses — Activity that neutralizes, destroys, or temporarily<br />

degrades surface-based enemy air defenses by destructive and/or disruptive means. Also<br />

called SEAD. See also electromagnetic spectrum; electronic warfare. (JP 3-01)<br />

surface action group — A temporary or standing organization of combatant ships, other<br />

than carriers, tailored for a specific tactical mission. Also called SAG. See group;<br />

mission. (JP 3-<strong>02</strong>)<br />

surface combatant — A ship constructed and armed for combat use with the capability to<br />

conduct operations in multiple maritime roles against air, surface and subsurface<br />

threats, and land targets.<br />

Surface Deployment and Distribution Command — A major command of the US Army,<br />

and the US Transportation Command’s component command responsible for<br />

designated continental United States land transportation as well as common-user water<br />

terminal and traffic management service to deploy, employ, sustain, and redeploy US<br />

forces on a global basis. Also called SDDC. See also transportation component<br />

surface smuggling event — In counterdrug operations, the sighting of a suspected drug<br />

smuggling vessel or arrival of a suspected drug smuggling vessel. See also arrival<br />

surface-to-air missile site — A plot of ground prepared in such a manner that it will readily<br />

accept the hardware used in surface-to-air missile system. (JP 3-01)<br />
