material representation, likeness or image.” -- Yajur Veda 32:3.<br />

ignorance and sunk <strong>in</strong> the greatest depths of misery who worship the<br />

uncreated, eternal prakrti -- the material cause of the world -- <strong>in</strong> place of<br />

the All-pervad<strong>in</strong>g God, but those who worship visible th<strong>in</strong>gs born of<br />

prakriti, such as the earth, trees, bodies (human and the like) <strong>in</strong> place of<br />

God are enveloped <strong>in</strong> still greater darkness, <strong>in</strong> other words, they are<br />

extremely foolish, fall <strong>in</strong>to an awful hell of pa<strong>in</strong> and sorrow, and suffer<br />

terribly for a long time." -- Yajur Veda 40:9.<br />

However idol worship and worship of many lower gods are a part of<br />

<strong>H<strong>in</strong>duism</strong> today. This must have developed out of the need for popular<br />

modes of communications. We all use symbols to express the<br />

<strong>in</strong>expressible concepts. The symbols, models and artistic presentations<br />

improve impact and produces long-term memory of what is taught.<br />

Power Po<strong>in</strong>t presentations are the norm of today. Icons were produced<br />

for the same purpose.<br />

Iconography is def<strong>in</strong>ed as (a) Pictorial illustration of a subject. (b) The<br />

collected representations illustrat<strong>in</strong>g a subject. (c) A set of specified or<br />

traditional symbolic forms associated with the subject or theme of a<br />

stylized work of art.<br />
