The Forgotten Factor <strong>in</strong> <strong>India</strong>n Religious History – Manichæism<br />

When St.Thomas came to <strong>India</strong> <strong>in</strong> AD 52, there were<br />

essentially three religious groups. The Vedic, the Budhist,<br />

the Ja<strong>in</strong>. With<strong>in</strong> the twenty years of his m<strong>in</strong>istry all through<br />

<strong>India</strong>, he was able to transform the <strong>India</strong>n Religious<br />

environment. He established the <strong>India</strong>n Catholic Church all<br />

over <strong>India</strong> with worship of Isa <strong>in</strong> culturally relevant way <strong>in</strong><br />

Temples - Kovil or Pally. S<strong>in</strong>ce these churches were solely<br />

dependent on the oral traditions without contact with the rest<br />

of the Catholic Churches, it is not surpris<strong>in</strong>g that lot of<br />

syncretization came <strong>in</strong> force. Like the rest of the Catholic<br />

Churches elsewhere <strong>in</strong> the world, <strong>India</strong>n Churches were also<br />

under the grip of Gnosticism. . Similar transformation also<br />

occurred <strong>in</strong> other countries. Clear and specific example is the<br />

Roman Catholic Church, which syncretizes with local<br />

religions wherever it goes. Except for the recognition of the<br />

historical Jesus, the Roman Catholic Church differs very little<br />

from the H<strong>in</strong>du Sanadhana Dharma of today.<br />

Manichaean, the Gnostic from Persia visited <strong>India</strong> and had<br />

extensive m<strong>in</strong>istry convert<strong>in</strong>g the orphan Christian Churches<br />
