Janamejaya's Conquest<br />

Janameya, <strong>in</strong> revenge for the death of his father, who had been killed by<br />

a Naga destroyed the forest area of Nagaland. Thus `an ancient race of<br />

serpent worshippers known as Nagas, are said to have been forced by<br />

certa<strong>in</strong> Brahmanical <strong>in</strong>cantations to enter the fire of a great sacrifice'<br />

[Mah.wh.46.n1 ]. Thus, accord<strong>in</strong>g to the Mahabharata the Nagas were<br />

burnt alive en masse <strong>in</strong> the manner of concentration camps.<br />

In another account, Pariskhit, the grandson of Arjuna was killed by<br />

Takshaka, a Naga k<strong>in</strong>g, and hence "Janmejaya, the son of Parikshit had<br />

to wage a long and bloody war with the Nagas and killed thousands of<br />

them" [ 1800,p.40 ].<br />

(Chandravamsi), <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the victors of the Mahabharata and<br />
