Indra was the first of the nomadic Aryan leaders to descend <strong>in</strong>to <strong>India</strong>.<br />

Sack of the M<strong>in</strong>or Towns<br />

Initially, Indra sacked and pillaged the m<strong>in</strong>or towns and villages of the<br />

Indus countryside. He is thus praised by the Vedic sages as Puroha or<br />

Purandhara, `sacker of cities' [ S+T.366 ] and is later elevated <strong>in</strong>to<br />

godhood, ultimately becom<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>in</strong>carnation of Vishnu. He destroyed<br />

100 m<strong>in</strong>or Indus towns:<br />

" Indra overthrew 100 Puras made of stone (asmanmayi) for his<br />

worshipper Divodasa [RgV.IV.30.20], evidently belong<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

Sambara who is a Dasa (non-Aryan black) of the mounta<strong>in</strong> "<br />
