pregnancy it is part of a formula called Mother's cordial, a syrup prepared with Partridgeberry, Helonias, Ginger and<br />

several other herbs. This syrrup has traditionally been used to prepare a woman for delivery. My wife who is also a<br />

large woman used this and her contractions lasted only 2 and 1/2 hours before she delivered our baby girl Angelica. It<br />

is also used to stimulate labor once it has begun when contractions are feeble. Finally it is useful for anxiety especially<br />

birth anxiety.<br />

Beth Root, Birth root, Latin Name: Trillium erectum, Traditionally used as part of formula to stimulate delivery<br />

1 part each Blue Cohosh, Spikenard and Beth Root<br />

Partridgeberry, Squaw vine, Latin Name: Michella repens, One of the key ingredients in Mother's Cordial<br />

(Helonias, Blue Cohosh, Ginger, Blue Vervain) given last 2-3 weeks of pregnancy to help prevent false labor pains,<br />

prevents overdue labors, make labor less painful. Used in <strong>com</strong>bination with Raspberry throughout pregnancy for<br />

tonification of uterus. Use postpartum w/ Raspberry leaf & Lady's Mantle help return uterus back to normal size.<br />

Lady's Mantle, Latin Name Alchemillia vulgaris, A. Mollis: useful for boggy and atonic uterus in <strong>com</strong>bination as<br />

mentioned above.<br />

Blue Vervain, Simplers Joy, Latin Name: Verbena hastata (many species of vervainus, but blue is best): This is<br />

an underutilized herb, Blue Vervain is a great connector herb between the nervous system and female reproductive<br />

system. It is great for anxiety, irritability, cramping and spasms. Used in <strong>com</strong>bination as mentioned above.<br />

Spikenard, Latin Name: Aralria racemosa: Stimulate pokey labor, used in <strong>com</strong>bination as mentioned above<br />

Finally a herbal tincture <strong>com</strong>bination to dilate the cervix is 1/4 part Lobelia, 1 part Spikenard, 1 part Blue<br />

Cohosh, 1/4 part Cottonroot bark, 1/4 part ginger take 30 - 40 drops three times a day. The caution with this one is<br />

Lobelia can cause nausea, which usually indicates a multiple birth i.e. twins or that nausea has been a factor with<br />

previous births.<br />
