Regionally Controlled Weed<br />
Blackberry<br />
Description: An erect woody bush with scrambling and<br />
prickly stems (canes).<br />
flowers: White to pink flowers with 5 petals form in clusters<br />
at the end of branches. Flowers from December to February.<br />
leaves: Oval, dark glossy green on the upper side and<br />
lighter underneath with fine hairs. Edges lightly serrated.<br />
Leaves shed in winter.<br />
stems: Erect or sprawling canes up to 7 m long. Green to<br />
reddish purple and covered in curved thorns.<br />
fruit: Produced from December - March. Initially hard<br />
green cluster of berry segments turning to red then black on<br />
ripening.<br />
Note: Invades natural watercourses as well as agricultural<br />
land. Inhibits natural regeneration and reduces agricultural<br />
productivity. Weed of National Significance.<br />
similar Native species: Could be confused with native<br />
Rubus species, such as the Small-leaf Bramble, Rubus<br />
parvifolius.<br />
