Hypericum perforatum<br />

St John’s Wort<br />

Description: An erect herb 80-120 cm tall.<br />

flowers: Bright yellow, 2-2.5 cm wide with 5 petals. In<br />

clusters at the end of upper branches. Tiny black dots along<br />

margins. Occurring between late Spring and Summer.<br />

fruit: 3-celled capsule, 5-10 mm long with many seeds.<br />

leaves: Green, lighter underneath in opposite pairs<br />

1.5-3 cm long. Numerous small oil glands give a perforated<br />

appearance when the leaf if held up to the light.<br />

stems: Several woody, reddish, with two ridges and dark<br />

glands. Branched towards the top.<br />

Note: May cause “photosensitisation” in stock.<br />

similar Native species: Could be confused with native<br />

Hypericum species, such as Matted St. John’s wort (H.<br />

japonicum) or Small St. John’s wort (H. gramineum).<br />
