Thistle - Nodding<br />
Description: An erect annual or biennial growing to 1.6 m<br />
tall.<br />
flowers: Pink, red, purple or occasionally white. Formed in<br />
drooping solitary heads at the end of branches surrounded by<br />
stiff spines. 4-8 cm in diameter and covered in a fine down.<br />
Occur between Spring and Summer.<br />
leaves: Green, rosette leaves up to 50 cm long with<br />
spikes around the margins. Pale toothed margins and pale<br />
prominent mid veins. Stem leaves smaller, deeply toothed,<br />
stem clasping with wings running down the stem from the leaf<br />
base.<br />
stems: Erect, winged and downy or cobwebby. Branched<br />
towards the top.<br />
Note: Forms dense unpalatable stands. Competes with<br />
pastures.<br />
