Description: Erect shrub 1-1.5 m tall.
flowers: Yellow, 2-3 cm in diameter, in clusters at the ends
of branches, with 5 petals and numerous stamens. Flowers
between Spring and Summer.
fruit: Globular, 3-celled berry to 8 mm in diameter, changes
from green to red to black as it matures.
leaves: Opposite, stem clasping, green with a reddish
appearance in Autumn and to 10 cm long.
stems: Several reddish stems emerging from a woody base
with 2 opposite ridges or wings along the stems.
Roots: Several shallow roots to 30 cm deep.
similar Native species: Could be confused with native
Hypericum species, such as Matted St. John’s wort (H.
japonicum) or Small St. John’s wort (H. gramineum).
