Regionally Controlled Weed<br />

Tutsan<br />

Description: Erect shrub 1-1.5 m tall.<br />

flowers: Yellow, 2-3 cm in diameter, in clusters at the ends<br />

of branches, with 5 petals and numerous stamens. Flowers<br />

between Spring and Summer.<br />

fruit: Globular, 3-celled berry to 8 mm in diameter, changes<br />

from green to red to black as it matures.<br />

leaves: Opposite, stem clasping, green with a reddish<br />

appearance in Autumn and to 10 cm long.<br />

stems: Several reddish stems emerging from a woody base<br />

with 2 opposite ridges or wings along the stems.<br />

Roots: Several shallow roots to 30 cm deep.<br />

similar Native species: Could be confused with native<br />

Hypericum species, such as Matted St. John’s wort (H.<br />

japonicum) or Small St. John’s wort (H. gramineum).<br />
