Mesquite<br />
Description: Six species or subspecies recognised in<br />
Australia. Small tree or shrub, between 1-15 m tall.<br />
flowers: Yellow cylinder shaped flower spikes 5-10 cm long,<br />
clusters of 2-5 at the end of branches. Flowers in Summer.<br />
leaves: Bright green, consisting of 1-3 segments of 6-18<br />
opposite pairs of leaflets. Leaflets are 5-12 mm long.<br />
stems: Thick and woody with grey-brown or black bark.<br />
Older bark is rough and newer growth smooth. Spikes are<br />
present on the main stem and on branches above each leaf<br />
stalk.<br />
fruit: Straw coloured seedpods 10-20 cm long, containing<br />
up to 20 hard black seeds.<br />
Note: Invasive and aggressive competitors that exclude other<br />
vegetation.<br />
similar Native species: Unlikely to be confused with native<br />
species.<br />
