Description: A prostrate Summer growing annual.<br />

flowers: Yellow, 8-15 mm in diameter with 5 petals.<br />

Growing from leaf axils in early Summer through to Autumn.<br />

leaves: Darker on top and slightly hairy underneath. Each<br />

leaf consists of 4-8 pairs of small leaflets 5-12 mm long.<br />

stems: Numerous green to reddish-brown stems radiating<br />

from a central crown. Up to 2 m long and sometimes slightly<br />

erect when competing for space or light.<br />

fruit: A woody burr with sharp rigid spines up to 6 mm long,<br />

splitting into 5 segments when mature.<br />

Note: Caltrop burrs damage the feet of animals and are<br />

a painful nuisance to people, especially on playing fields,<br />

walkways and around buildings.<br />

similar Native species: Unlikely to be confused with native<br />

species.<br />
