Regionally Controlled Weed<br />

Noogoora Burr<br />

Description: Erect up to 2.5 m tall, but usually under 1 m.<br />

Can be single stemmed or much branched.<br />

flowers: Inconspicuous, formed in clusters in leaf axils near<br />

branch tips. Flowers late Summer.<br />

leaves: Green and darker on upper surface. Lower leaves<br />

opposite and upper leaves alternate. Similar in shape to a<br />

maple or grape and up to 15 cm in diameter. Serrated edge<br />

and a rough texture. Prominent red/purple veins and stalks.<br />

stems: Blotched with purple and covered in short, coarse<br />

hairs.<br />

fruit: A hard, woolly, oval shaped burr with numerous spines<br />

and 2 prominent beaks on the end. In clusters of 2-13.<br />

Note: A contaminant of wool.<br />

similar Native species: Unlikely to be confused with native<br />

species.<br />
