Regionally Controlled Weed<br />

Thistle - St Barnaby’s<br />

Centaurea solstitialis<br />

(Yellow Star Weed, Yellow Centaurea, Golden Star Thistle)<br />

Description: An erect annual or short lived perennial thistle,<br />

to 75 cm tall.<br />

flowers: Bright yellow on oval shaped heads 1-1.5 cm long.<br />

Solitary at the end of branches and surrounded by sharp<br />

golden spines. Flowers between late Spring and Summer.<br />

leaves: Silver/green due to a covering of downy hairs. Lower<br />

leaves deeply toothed, 20 cm long. Upper leaves narrow,<br />

5 cm long and clasping the stem, forming wings running<br />

downwards.<br />

stems: Branched, downy, winged and without spikes.<br />

Note: Competes with, and restricts the growth of pastures<br />

and crops.<br />

similar Native species: Unlikely to be confused with native<br />

species.<br />
