Sycamore Maple<br />
Description: Deciduous tree to 30 m tall.<br />
flowers: Tiny yellow flowers hanging in clusters 7-12 cm<br />
long.<br />
fruit: Winged, in pairs, 2-5 cm long and dispersed by wind<br />
and water. Appears in early Autumn.<br />
leaves: Coarse, opposite, dark green above and pale<br />
below, 7-15 cm wide with 5 lobes and a serrated edge. Some<br />
varieties produce reddish brown leaves when young, turning<br />
dark green when mature.<br />
stems: Greenish brown when young, turning greyish brown<br />
and scaly on mature stems.<br />
Note: Often spread by the careless disposal of garden waste.<br />
similar Native species: Unlikely to be confused with native<br />
species.<br />
