Regionally Controlled Weed<br />

Thistle - Saffron<br />

Description: Erect, spiny, up to 1 m tall.<br />

flowers: Yellow or cream with faint red or black lines.<br />

Solitary heads at the end of branches and surrounded by<br />

sharp spiky bracts. Occurring between November and<br />

December.<br />

leaves: Lower leaves deeply toothed, 20 cm long and stem<br />

clasping. Stem leaves alternate and stiff with vicious spikes.<br />

Prominently veined and sometimes downy on upper surface.<br />

stems: Straw coloured, rigid and ribbed. Single stem<br />

branched at the top.<br />

Note: Contributes to contamination of wool.<br />

similar Native species: Unlikely to be confused with native<br />

species.<br />
